Seneschalstown’s U-16 Ladies got their Division 2 campaign off to a perfect start on Sunday against a strong and determined Oldcastle side with both sides serving up a thriller for the crowd in Gilson Park with no less than 13 goals between them!!

Oldcastle opened the scoring with a point before this was cancelled out by Shauna Gordon who soccer style kicked over the bar to open the Furze account. After great work Orla Finnegan pounced to score the first goal of the day. Oldcastle responded with a pointed free before Mallaidh Breen hit the back of the net after a great block from Aoibhe Monaghan who was enjoying her new position in the half forward line. Oldcastle responded almost immediately with a well worked goal and followed up with a point to take the lead by a point for the first time. Indeed, they found the back of the net again after a couple of superb saves from goalie Sinead McLarney. Aoibhe and Caragh Monaghan added on two points before Oldcastle finished the first half with a brace of points to take a slender lead into the break.

Half Time: Oldcastle 2-04 Seneschalstown 2-03

Playing with a slight breeze in the second half and a reshuffling of the team the Furze Girls got off to a perfect start with Aoife Mulvany finishing off a great move with a perfect shot to the corner of the net. Oldcastle responded with two fine points keeping them very much in touch with the visitors. Midfielder Caragh Monaghan was having a superb afternoon and began to turn the screw in Oldcastle hitting the back of the net before sending over a fine point from play. A surging run from deep found her on the twenty-one-yard line where she unleashed a superb strike to hit the top corner of the net, a wonder goal which gave Seneschalstown 5-04 to 2-06 lead. Oldcastle responded with three points before Aoife Lenihan found Zoe Kirwan with a perfect long pass who made no mistake and rifled to the Oldcastle net for Seneschalstown 6th goal.

Oldcastle to their credit never gave up and believe surged through their veins when the scored three goals in succession to really pull themselves back into the game. Incredibly the scoreline now read Oldcastle 5-06 Seneschalstown 6-07. Caragh Monaghan steadied the nerves with another fine point after great work from Lauren Donnelly and Orla Finnegan. Another sweeping move from defence Mallaidh Breen found Aoife Mulvany free who popped over a fine point bringing her tally to 1-02.

Another fine move found the powerful Zoe Kirwan find the net again giving some daylight between the teams. Oldcastle surged forward to their credit and were rewarded with another superb goal to leave only two points between the sides. The Furze girls didn’t panic despite the strong Oldcastle resurgence and Aoife Lenihan pointed and Shauna Gordon scored the Furze final point before Oldcastle came back with 2 points of their own before the final whistle.

It is always a difficult journey to Oldcastle for this team but the Seneschalstown Girls showed great character to overcome a very strong Oldcastle team who never gave up. This was a strong team performance where Sinead McLarney in goals was simply superb shot with her stopping and kicking while in front of her Sadhbh McLarney Leah Ryan Caoimhe Dunne was tested time and again. The half back line dug deep and repelled attack after attack. The running midfield partnership of Aoife Lenihan and Caragh Monaghan got through a mountain of work as they covered every blade of grass. The industrious half forward line of Aoibhe Monaghan, Lauren Donnelly and Orla Finnegan and the inside line of Shauna Gordon, Mallaidh Breen and Aoife Mulvany all contributed to an excellent win on the road…up next Rathkenny.
