Seneschalstown 1-15 Walterstown 0-07

Seneschalstown made the perfect start to the new All-County Football ‘A’ League Division 1B campaign by comfortably beating Walterstown by 11 points on Friday night. The visitors were undoubtedly deserving winners, once they took the lead inside 30 seconds they never looked back.

Alan Mulvany opened Seneschalstown’s scoring when pointing straight from the throw in, and the lightening quick start continued as Cathal Finnegan put over the first of his nine points on his return from an arm injury. The older of the Finnegan’s, Eoin, made it three points in as many minutes with his first of the evening. It took the home side a few early minutes to settle, Brian O’Connell pointed a 6th minute free and followed up with a fine effort from a sideline. That would be as close as the home side would get for the remainder, as Ciaran Marks men would kick the final five points of the half, which could have been more had it been not for some waywardness in front of the posts. A brace from Cathal Finnegan (1f), and points from Mulvany, Rob Wogan and Johnny Gilsenan opened up a six point advantage by half time.

The away side wasted little time in adding to their lead once the second half commenced. Cathal Finnegan adding two more points to his own tally, one of which included a sumptuous dummy over by the sideline before bouncing off a couple of challenges. Brian O’Connell responded for Walterstown with a free, but Finnegan was really enjoying himself out there and followed up with the next three points, two from frees. Walterstown then had a mini purple patch, kicking three of the next four scores with Seneschalstown’s score again coming from the boot of Finnegan.

Seneschalstown made a couple of changes as the game began to open up a bit and it was one of those subs who finished off the game as a contest. After Alan Mulvany found Ross Howard in plenty of space, Howard ran at the Walterstown goal and excellently finished into the top left corner of the goal. Seán Commons closed off the scoring for Seneschalstown as they returned down the road satisfied with their evening’s work. Up next is a home match against Duleek/Bellewstown in two weeks.
