Meath Ladies U-16 Division 2 Championship

Donaghmore/Ashbourne 0-06 Seneschalstown 3-14

With a gale force wind driving straight down the back pitch in Ashbourne, the proverbial game of two halves was on the cards. However unusually both teams played better when facing the elements. The Seneschalstown girls, starting with the aid of the wind, tagged on two early points but to their credit the Donaghmore Ashbourne played some good football into the breeze and halved the deficit by the middle of the half. A shower of driving rain didn’t help things and it was difficult to control the passes with the wind. The Furze Girls extended the lead to 3 points but the home team tagged on two further scores to keep the game in the melting pot. Two further points on the run in to the break had the Seneschalstown girls leading by 0-07 to 0-03 at the break.

Facing into such a strong breeze in the second half, one wondered if a 4 point lead was sufficient but from the off the Seneschalstown girls were up for the challenge and extended their lead direct from the throw in and tagged on another 1-1 by the thirty fifth minute. Playing sensible football with low passes, short give and goes, the girls had much more control of their game and consistently keep the score board ticking over while the defence was reading the game well and thwarting a gallant home outfit who never gave up and deservedly got 3 points in the final quarter. Both teams deserve great credit for the effort and skill on show in such difficult conditions
