Meath U-14 Division 2 Round 5

Seneschalstown 3-14 Round Towers 1-11

The recent good run of form for Seneschalstown’s U-14 side continued on Thursday evening when they came from behind early in the second half to eventually run out nine point victors thanks to a late scoring burst when they outscored Round Towers by 2-08 to 0-01 in the last twenty minutes.

On a perfect evening for football with only a slight breeze blowing across Fr. Tully Park this was a well contested match between two evenly matched sides and truth be told the nine point differential which was between them at the end was very harsh on Round Rowers.

Seneschalstown were quick out of the blocks when pointing twice in the sixth minute through wing forwards Will Finnegan and Sean Commons. This seemed to spark Round Towers into life and their response was very impressive as they recorded five points in the next ten minutes to surge into a three point lead. Ross Mullen steadied the Seneschalstown ship with two minors either side of a Joseph Moore effort which came as a result of good play from Jamie Kirwan and Cathal Hickey.

Round Towers edged one point back in front in the twenty second minute before Moore notched 1-01, the goal being fortuitous when a point attempt dropped into the net on the run into the interval to see his side with their noses in front by three points at half time.

The away side began the second half in whirlwind fashion when they hit 1-03 in the opening five minutes of the half to rock Seneschalstown. The team though showed plenty of composure to regroup and for the remainder of the game they took charge and rattled off 2-08 to their opponents solitary point.

Sean Commons started the run of scores off when catching a stray kickout and after taking a solo to compose himself nearly burst the roof of the net to give the goalkeeper no chance of making a save. Moore then added a point after catching a Ross Mullen free before Round Towers scored their final point of the evening.

From here to the final whistle though Seneschalstown took control of the game aided by a strong performance from their half back line of Kit Waddington, Simon Rooney and Josh Ryan who adopted a Thou Shall Not Pass stance. Commons struck for his second goal in six minutes after being set up by Will Finnegan before seven points in a row were sent sailing between the uprights courtesy of a brace apiece from Cathal Hickey and Commons as well as efforts from Ross Mullen, Simon Rooney and Joseph Moore.

Following this victory Seneschalstown now sit joint top of the division tied with Clann Na Gael and Rathkenny on eight points, with all three clubs having won four of their five matches. Meanwhile credit is due to referee Andrew Lenehan who did an excellent job of letting the game flow while also being quick to get on top of any incidents of indiscipline.
