Ladies Division 1 Football League Round 1

Seneschalstown 0-6 Royal Girls 2-8

Seneschalstown lost out in the opening Div. 1 league encounter against Royal Gaels in the well-appointed Dunshaughlin venue. With Father Tully Park unavailable, Seneschalstown had to concede home advantage.

Shorn of the service of a few regulars due to college commitments, Seneschalstown took to the field with a mix of Senior, Junior and U-16 players. When the game did commence Seneschalstown got the best possible start when Roisin Commons lofted over a fine point in the first minute. A minute later Louise “Cheesey” Coyle split the posts after a fine fetch and shot on the turn. The early exchanges were even with both sides guilty of a few wides which was understandable for a first round match.

It took twelve minute for Royal Gaels to open to their account, draw level a minute later and went in front on seventeen minutes. In between the Gaels levelling and going in front, Seneschalstown netminder Grainne Gordon made and excellent save. Roisin commons then levelled things up on eighteen minutes with another fine point from play before Stacey Grimes popped over a free following a late challenge on Kiah Geraghty. Cheesey extended the visitors lead with another fine point on twenty-two minutes and Commons landed her hat trick of points with another fine strike three minutes before the break. The Gaels drew level just before the break with a goal of a contentious nature. Gordon made another fine save and after collecting the rebound appeared to most people to be fouled and knocked to the ground dislodging the ball from her grasp and the ball was put into the net to level things up at the break at 0-6 to 1-3.

The second half started with the visitors spurning a number of decent chances and were made to pay following a goal from a quickly taken free in the thirty seventh minute awarded harshly for throwing the ball as the Seneschalstown players arm was been held by the opposing player. The home team the added further points on thirty-eight and forty minutes and by the three quarter stage had added another point. Gordon then produced another save and the home team tagged on two points in the final quarter to run out winners in a fine sporting game of football.
