Seneschalstown 2-10 Simonstown Gaels 2-08

Seneschalstown recorded their 3rd win of the Division 1 League with a two point win over Simonstown Gaels in Seneschalstown on Thursday night. Two late points helped them edge over the line following a spirited fightback from the North Navan side, helped by two sin bins on the Seneschalstown side. With preparation less than ideal for the home side, they will be happy have picked up three valuable points.

As per the LGFA rules, the game started with 14 a side as the visitors were only able to field with that number.

Seneschalstown hit the ground running, notching up 1-03 without reply in the opening 15 minutes of the game. Orla Finnegan, returning to the starting fifteen, nabbed the goal inside three minutes when finishing to the net soccer style after the ball fell kindly for her in the Simonstown square with only the keeper to beat. Having made an impact when moved further out the field last week in Carlanstown, centre forward Róisín Commons popped over two consecutive points and it looked for all the world that it was going to be one way traffic for the majority of the game.

This was only enhanced when Meadhbh Hickey added a point for herself, quickly pouncing on a loose ball when a shot had hit the post. However, Simonstown served a timely reminder of their ability when finding the Seneschalstown net on 14 minutes.

Again, this didn’t look like knocking Seneschalstown out of stride, Commons again finding the target after showing some good strength to engineer a shooting opportunity for herself.

On the 20 minute mark Anna Wogan calmly slotted the ball to the corner of the net after some good build up play involving Eve Wardick, moving Seneschalstown 2-04 to 1-00 ahead.
To their credit, from here Simonstown came thundering into the game. Four of the last six first half points went their way, with Seneschalstown’s riposte coming from the boot of Kiah Geraghty on both occasions. The lead had been narrowed to five points at the break, 2-06 to 1-04.

Like in the first half, Róisín Commons got the hosts first point of the second period but Simonstown were to dominate much of the remainder of the game. Three points followed for Navan outfit in the space of seven minutes , which was broken by Orla Finnegan when she converted a free with 50 minutes on the clock.

However, Simonstown were on level terms by the 55th minute after a quickfire 1-01 which coincided with Seneschalstowns double sin bin, and it looked as if they had all the momentum to go on and turn the draw into their first victory. Crucially, as the clock ticked towards the 60 minute mark Seneschalstown returned to their full complement of players and this was perhaps telling. Eve Wardick steadied the ship with a point from 25 metres to nudge the hosts in front, and Orla Finnegan made sure of the victory when she kicked a tricky free with the clock in the red.

Seneschalstown move up to nine points and are in fifth place in the table after this win.
